– “Bob recebeu a coroa da justiça e Deus lhe disse agora. “servo bom e fiel”.
Não, isto ainda não aconteceu. A coroa da justiça será entregue no Ultimo dia.

– “Margareth agora entrou na vida eterna.” Isto pode reduzir a
importância do Batismo, onde já recebemos o dom da vida. E a vida eterna
plena só acontecerá quando também o corpo for ressuscitado.

– “Joao agora foi para o seu lar eterno”. Na verdade, só iremos para o
lar eterno depois da ressurreição da carne. A existência da alma sem o corpo
não é nosso lar eterno.

– “Julia agora está com o Senhor para sempre”. Isto também implica que a
ressurreição do corpo é coisa de menor importância, a alma seria o mais
importante.

– “Isto não é um funeral – é a celebração da vitória do José!” Nada
indica isso num funeral. Na verdade, é o contrario – a lei em toda a sua dureza
está pregada diante de nós. Especialmente se é uma criança, uma pessoa jovem,
um acidente...A morte é um sinal de que o pecado ainda não foi de todo abolido
na carne.

Things You Should Not Say at
Funerals

As a
young pastor in the early 1980s, I learned pretty quickly that you
hear
things said at funerals that (strictly speaking) were not true. The
deceased
was often described as the kind of person who “never turned
away
anyone in need” or who “would give anyone the shirt off his back” or
who was “always a loving and patient husband.” Recognizing quickly the
need to “translate”
comments made during times of intense emotional
strain,
I also learned that it was probably a grim thing when the best that
was said
about the dead person was “Oh, he was a real character all right!”
As a
not-as-young pastor now in the early years of the twenty-first
century,
I still hear at funerals things said about the dead Christian that
are not
true. The problem is that I hear them said by the pastor, as part of
his
sermon. These are things which, strictly speaking, are not true. More
importantly,
these are things which, theologically speaking, are not true.
And so
we ought not to say them. Because ultimately, statements such as
the ones
highlighted below downplay the real meaning of death, and they
diminish
the great hope of resurrection that is God’s answer in Christ to
the
reality of death. The following are things that should not be said at
funerals.
